What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore the natural appearance of the facial skin by filling in the dermis where the volume and collagen has been lost. Dermal fillers are an important part of any anti-aging program.
Where do you use dermal fillers?
The most common areas treated with dermal fillers are the nasal labial folds (lines from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth), marionette lines (lines from the corner of the mouth, downwards), lips, under eyes, and acne scars. Dermal fillers are also used to treat the hollow area below the eye, shape the nose, define and add volume to the lips, and shape the cheeks. These corrections give us a more youthful appearance.
Why is collagen so important?
Collagen is a protein, fibrous in nature. Collagen works with elastic in providing structural support for the skin. Collagen provides volume and gives shape to our face. Loss of collagen is mostly due to the natural aging process. As we enter our 30s, collagen begins to breakdown resulting in wrinkles. By replacing lost collagen, the structural support is strengthened.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a natural complex sugar that retains water, absorbing more than 1000 times its weight. It adds volume to the skin’s surface. HA binds with collagen and elastin that transports essential nutrients to cells within the skin. HA is a clear colorless gel. The combination of the HA, collagen and elastin provides structure to the skin. HA dermal fillers add volume to facial wrinkles. No allergy test is required because this sugar is found in all living animals. HA represents the fastest growing non-invasive aesthetic procedures in the United States.
How are dermal fillers administered to the skin?
Although most dermal fillers contain a numbing agent in them, we first apply a topical anesthetic cream to numb the skin. The dermal filler is injected just below the skin surface. The treatment is comfortable and the results are immediate.
What types of fillers are available and how long do they last?
There are various types of products available lasting from 9 months to 2 years or longer. These include: Juvederm XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Belotero and Sculptra.
What is the difference between a dermal filler and a volumizer?
Dermal fillers are designed to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. They are used to target specific concerns. Juvederm and Restylane are the two most popular dermal fillers on today’s market. They are typically used to treat the wrinkles in the lower part of the face (nasal labial folds, marionette lines, and lips). Volumizers (Radiesse and Sculptra) are designed to do just that, add volume. They replace the lost collagen and provide structure to the face.
How do I know what to use?
Our staff offers the expertise in helping you determine the best course of treatment. Some patients require a small amount of correction to obtain their results while other patients use a combination of the various treatment options to achieve their desired look. Using a combination of dermal fillers and volumizers is often referred to as the “liquid face lift.”
