Studies have shown that up to 67 percent of adults surveyed in the Unites States are unhappy with their double chin, putting it on par with age-revealing wrinkles that develop around and below the eyes. This problem plagues young and old, men and women alike, especially those who find that diet and exercise do little to make stubborn fat go away. For these people, the solution is KYBELLA®. Orange County's Patient Preferred Dermatology offers the injectable treatment, which destroys the targeted fat and gives definition to the chin line
In adults, fat cells typically grow and shrink depending on a variety of factors, but they generally remain at a constant number in the body. The effects of KYBELLA® are gradual and long lasting, since the targeted fat cells are destroyed. Patients will see their double chin recede in the weeks and months after treatment. Although several treatments may be recommended, no further sessions are necessary once ideal results are achieved.
KYBELLA® is a modified form of deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in your digestive tract to help break down consumed fat. When used as a cosmetic and injected into the submental area just below the chin, KYBELLA® restores definition in the jawline by targeting and destroying fat cells
The FDA has approved KYBELLA® only for use in adults and only in the submental area.
KYBELLA® has been the focus of more than 20 clinical studies that have clearly demonstrated its safety and efficacy in reducing submental fullness beneath the chin.
Some people who diet in an effort to slim down find that their double chin remains unchanged. Others see visible signs of their efforts appear—then disappear as fat cells that shrank in size later swell again.
KYBELLA® removes unwanted fat via a novel strategy. The deoxycholic acid in KYBELLA® destroys targeted fat by physically disrupting the fat cells so they no longer function properly and thus die off. Then the body takes over, processing and safely removing the dead fat cells. Although these old fat cells are eliminated, an increase in body weight will add new fat cells to the treated area. Therefore, continued healthy lifestyle efforts are encouraged in order to minimize weight gain and to maintain your sleek and newly defined neck and jawline.
KYBELLA® is injected directly into the undesirable fat in the submental area of your double chin.
Because the doctors and nurses at Patient Preferred Dermatology are experienced and well-trained, the procedure is quick and comfortable. Compared to a standard surgical procedure, the advantage of the KYBELLA® treatment is that the procedure is safe and there is no downtime.

Since the KYBELLA® injections affect the skin surface minimally, most patients can go back to their normal routines immediately.
The number of treatment sessions necessary depends on a patient's starting clinical exam and ultimate aesthetic goals. In general, two to four sessions are recommended, each given four to six weeks apart. A nice benefit of receiving KYBELLA® injections gradually is that we can customize the treatment to fit each patient's unique needs.
Side effects are typically minimal and temporary. Possible side effects include minor redness and swelling at the injection site.
While KYBELLA is ideal for treating submental fullness in your double chin, there are other treatments to address sagging skin in your face and neck, which can give you a tired and aged appearance. Patient Preferred Dermatology offers a range of options designed to work individually or together to achieve the desired result for each patient.
Thermage® and eMatrix® both use radiofrequency-generated heat to stimulate collagen production to tighten loose skin. Their lifting effect can be further enhanced by the application of skin-tightening creams.
Neck bands that appear as vertical cords running from the chin to the collarbone can be softened by injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Note that these treatments, including KYBELLA®, work well for contouring the jawline. Many patients also wish to regain a youthful appearance and improve the texture and tone of their skin. We recommend chemical peels and CO2 laser resurfacing to reduce facial fine lines and pigmentation irregularities.
